Piano recital reminder – The piano students of Janice Johnston will present a recital Thursday, Dec. 15, at 6:30 pm at the Rippey Community room. Non-piano students will assist with the program by reading some poetry selections, handing out programs and serving as hosts.
Midge Vannatta will provide accompaniment so the audience can do some Holiday singing.
The youth will not only share their artistic talents, but also been busy with their teacher baking Christmas cookies that will be served at the conclusion of the program.
The public is invited and encouraged to attend this Rippey Christmas event.
Friends of Rippey breakfast – The Friends of Rippey hosted the annual Calendar Day Breakfast on Saturday, Dec. 3, at the Rippey Community Room. This has been a tradition for an estimated 80 years. Breakfast began at 8 am and was served until 11:30. Volunteers from the Friends of Rippey served the hungry people.
Breakfast casseroles, sausage, fruit, and cinnamon rolls were available for a free will donation, and it was estimated that 50-75 persons were in attendance. While this is endeavor is primarily a service for the community, more than $500 was generated. The funds will be used as match money when seeking grants from the Greene County Community Foundation.
Background Christmas music was provided by Midge Vannatta throughout the morning on Carson Griffith’s piano. Midge says it is easy to play, almost “playing itself at times.”
Three businesses provided calendars during the day. The Heartland Cooperative, Peoples Trust and savings Bank and Brubaker Shop had calendars to continue the long tradition. People’s Bank arranged to be open and to have services available Saturday. They also served delicious homemade individual cheese cakes and apple cider.
Perhaps the highlight of the day for young and old was the appearance of Santa and Mrs. Claus. They greeted the young at heart beginning at 10:30, listening to numerous children’s requests. They also spoke with several of the adults present about their behavior during the past year. Small gift bags that included candy and toys were given to the children by Santa and Mrs. Claus. This effort to assist Santa was done by the Rippey Lions Club.
In addition the children present were given a book to keep as part of the Rippey Methodist Church, “make a difference” program.
Mr. and Mrs. Claus also ventured to Peoples Bank, where they were welcomed by the bank staff. They were surprised to have a vehicle speedily drive up a child who was very concerned he may have been too late to see Santa.
The Friends of Rippey are grateful to the volunteers who made this tradition continue, and for those who came for breakfast and conversation. ~Mary Weaver and Mary Hick

Rippey UMC shares in “Change a Child’s Story” – Rippey United Methodist Church is part of a state-wide project of the Iowa United Methodist Church, “Change a Child’s Story.” In addition to donating books for children, adults can help children reading and build relationships with those children. Members and friends of the Rippey Church have also collected books and some of these books were part of the Iowa Annual Conference collection last June. Volunteers from the church have read with children at the Rippey public library. After the reading session, the child was given a book to keep. New books are being collected for the Christmas season.
